First off we gotta ask, being that we haven’t already, what does the name Sankofa stand for?
Sankofa is adinkra symbol. That means to go back and get. Sometimes represented as a heart or a bird flying forward while looking back with an egg in its mouth. I connect more with the bird. I feel that it is my duty to plant seeds of growth and change as i move thru life as those before me have.
Based off of the convos we’ve had with you and the content of your music, you seem to think differently about the universe and care about understanding it. What influenced you (if anything) or why do you think you chose to take the conscious route and use music as a tool to express that?
Honestly. There was a point in my life where i was lost. I was following things blindly. One day i woke up and I wanted to know where all my ideas and thoughts about life came from. I had a million questions and decided to find the answer for myself. I read a lot about different religions and saw that they were flawed and contradicted themselves. I studied the history of my people in america. The psychological conditioning that were placed on us during slavery and the effect controlled religion had on the mind. I started to get into esoteric teachings, allegory and ancient african spirituality. That and my analytical nature brought me to connect with the all that resides in me. When it comes to music, I feel i would be a liar if i conformed or spoke about things that don’t matter to me.
Could you tell us about your first project and EP Perception Formed, how it came into existence and what it represents to you?
Perception formed was originally suppose to be called quantum physics allegory lenses. I change it because i thought people would think it was an audio book. I was working off of this experiment i read about. Where these scientist would cut a slit in a box. Place the nose of the gun in it a fire a shoot and do this repeatedly to see if they and hit the same spot. I wanted to see if i could do this with music. Hit people in the heart each time. I mean even down to the way i went about writing the songs were all experiments. I focused a lot on the lyrics. I was really trying out different writing styles. Stepped out of my comfort zone and tried my best to be as honest and open as possible.
Grey Skys seems to be a favorite for many people, do you have a favorite track off of your project and why?
Yea grey skies seems to be a fav. For me tho its a battle between “Dreams” and “Heartache and pain”. Dreams because it was so organic. I got to sum up a lot of what i think about. A lot of what i was going thru at that time. Heartache and pain because it was a very personal song for me. The hook alone i feel speaks volumes.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with the people?
At the end of the day do what you connect with. Love more. Let go of things that bring you harm. Live more. Think for yourself. I have a few projects dropping this year that im very excited aboutFirst will be a collab ep with a beautiful soul and good friend of mines named Jazmine lovine. The other ya’ll will have to just wait on.
